The products include both metallic units in painted and galvanised steel
versions, plastic reinforced easy and quickly deployable and emergency
tanks. Transformers can sit in the metallic tanks or on gratings over
the tank, and a variety of accessories allow tank drainage of rainwater,
and also to minimise vibration noise.
35 percent of production is made to measure. Tanks are sized to suit
the actual installation, generally in accordance with the KVA rating of
the transformer. They can be supplied from 160 KVA size to over 3000 KVA.
Metallic tanks are supplied with two or more removable walls so that
the tank can be slid under an existing installation and the walls bolted
into place and sealed afterwards. Plastic tanks are supplied with geotextile
mats to protect from the ground and internal protection to slide the transformer.
They provide a quick and cost effective solution, especially for storage.
The patented fire extinguishing system can be fitted to complete tanks
or to concrete bunds to eliminate traditional systems such as pebble beds
which become polluted and are not particularly effective. The GMT system
is made up of metal slats which allow the oil through into the tank (or
liquid tight concrete bund) but due to the narrow path between slats insufficient
air penetrates and an oil fire in the tank is suffocated and will extinguish.
This system has been tested at the French National Prevention and Protection
Centre, witnessed by TuV Rheinland. Videos of testing are available. Various
different leak rates and sizes were tested with the fire extinguishing
in less than 3 minutes, providing a real improvement in safety, especially
useful for underground installations (for example under modern buildings
in cities).
Systems are completely designed and installed for the client: site measurement
survey, supply of components and installation work. The fire extinguishing
system is EDF approved.
GMT is ISO 9001:2000 approved and has supplied EDF for over ten years
in France, some 10 000 tanks having been installed for EDF. Numerous transformer
supply companies such as Areva, ABB and Schneider use GMT tanks.
