Bourns has integrated the gas tube product ranges acquired from Joslyn into its own offerings. These products include not only gas tubes themselves, but also station protectors (gas tubes inside plastic weatherproof housings, giving robust low cost modules), and multistage protectors in the form of signal and data line protection.
* Gas discharge tubes: Bourns offers an innovative and comprehensive family of gas discharge tubes for applications requiring high surge capacity, low capacitance, and long service life.

The range includes 8mm dia 2 and 3 pole tubes and 5mm dia 2 and 3 pole mini tubes. These are available from 75V to 600V dc sparkover (90V for 2 pole). The three pole tubes can be fitted with a high quality high current handling ‘switch grade’ failsafe, rated up to 30 A each side for 15 mins. Detailed data sheets available upon request.
* Station Protectors: Bourns can also provide a full range of station protectors for customer premises protection, or as primary protectors on alarm or data lines, either stand alone or in compact UL94V0 housings. These housings can also accommodate a coaxial broadband protector for cable TV.

For antenna systems Bourns propose a high quality coaxial protector with N or BNC connectors is available. The Bourns 1965 series coaxial protector is intended for use with low power VHF and UHF transmitters, 2 way base station transceivers, and receive only systems. The 1965 is symmetric and bi-directional. Either end may be used for the input or output. Various power and voltage choices are available.
* Multistage Protectors: A range designed to shield sensitive equipment connected to data and signal interfaces from damage or upset caused by electrical surges. Bourns signal and dataline protectors are all heavy duty multi-stage. A solid state section intercepts the leading edge of the surge in sub-nanosecond response time. Within microseconds, a three pole balanced gas tube, capable of handling 20 000 amperes lightning currents, crowbars the surge to ground. The protector remains in the crowbar state until the surge has passed and line voltages return to safe levels. The protector automatically restores the line to normal operation and awaits the next surge without the need to reset the breaker or replace the fuse. Protectors are generally placed as close as possible to the equipment to be protected. On a daisy-chain application, such as RS-485 or Fieldbus, a separate protector must be installed at each equipment node. Applications include RS232, RS422, RS485, Ethernet, closed circuit video, 4-20 mA, HART, and Fieldbus interface.
Ex.logo* For hazardous areas such as petrochemical plants or oil and gas pipelines, type 1669 protectors are ATEX certified for both flameproof and intrinsically safe circuits. A matching 1800 series rail mounted unit is used with these at the safe area end of the cabling, 1820-28-IS having the appropriate ATEX certification.
